Discovery Days 2022

Protein missiles that fight diseased cells, renewable energy infrastructure for the future, and the ways in which mathematics and computing science can give us insights into sexism are just some of the topics to be explored at the University of Dundee next week.

Discovery Days 2022 takes place from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 January. Nine newly appointed Professors will each talk for 15 minutes about their area of research, as will award-winning teachers, students and other members of staff.

The short presentations showcase the leading-edge work at the University helping to transform lives around the world. Due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s event will take place online, giving members of the public the opportunity to hear about innovative and impactful research in areas as diverse as art and design and life sciences.

Two of the sessions will be chaired by Professor Iain Gillespie, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Professor Gillespie said, “I am very much looking forward to our Discovery Days 2022, which promise to offer a fascinating exploration of a wide range of important topics, from health and wellbeing to forensic science, and our ground-breaking scientific research and arts practices. All our speakers are helping us to transform lives locally and around the world. I invite you to learn more about their discoveries and the positive benefits they bring to us and to many others.”

Speakers include:

•            Professor Philip Preshaw - Healthy Mouth for a Healthy Body

•            Dr Helen Gørrill - Colouring in the Gaps: Equal opportunities for artists of the future

•            Professor Sarah Coulthurst - Microbial warfare: Understanding how and why bacteria compete with their rivals

•            Professor Gopal Sapkota - Using protein missiles to take down disease-causing proteins from cells

•            Professor Karen Petrie - Why attacks on sexism are not attacks on men

•            Professor Michael Brown - Robust infrastructure for our future energy requirements

Members of the public are invited to attend as many sessions as they wish and will have the opportunity to ask the speakers questions about their work.

As well as showcasing the talents of Dundee’s academics, Discovery Days 2022 will also provide the public with the opportunity to witness the University Court at work. The institution’s governing body will host a public session on Wednesday 12 January, allowing interested parties to hear from and pose questions to leading figures from the University.
